Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

The things we get asked most often — from first-timers, parents, and curious crossfitters. Don't see yours? Drop us a line.

01 — Getting started

Your first class

How does the free trial actually work?

Book a trial through the button on this site, pick the program you want to try, and we'll confirm a class time within 24 hours. Show up 10 minutes early, sign a quick waiver, and we'll loan you a gi. There's no pressure to sign up after — try as many programs as you'd like.

What should I wear?

For your first class, just bring comfortable workout clothes — athletic shorts or leggings and a t-shirt. We provide a loaner gi (the traditional uniform) so you can focus on the class. After your trial, we can help you pick a gi that fits.

Do I need any experience to start?

None at all. The vast majority of our members started as complete beginners. Our Fundamentals program is a structured path from your very first day to confident, safe training in just a few weeks.

02 — Classes & training

On the mat

How often should I train to see results?

Most members notice changes in fitness, focus, and confidence within the first 4 – 6 weeks. Two to three classes a week is the sweet spot for steady, sustainable progress without burning out.

Will I have to spar on my first day?

No. Sparring (rolling) is only introduced when you're ready and always optional. The first few weeks are about learning fundamentals — movement, posture, escapes — at a safe, controlled pace.

What's the difference between gi and no-gi?

Gi training uses the traditional uniform and emphasizes grip-based technique. No-gi training is done in rashguards and shorts and is closer to grappling for MMA. We teach both — most members try one, then explore the other once they're comfortable.

03 — Safety & kids

Is it safe?

Is Jiu Jitsu safe for kids?

Yes — and arguably safer than most contact sports. Every class begins with structured warm-ups. Our certified instructors emphasize control, respect, and proper technique from day one. Kids train with kids their own age and skill level, in a dedicated kids room.

My child is shy. Will they be okay?

Some of our most confident kids today walked through the door painfully shy. Our coaches are trained specifically to draw kids out at their own pace. The structure of class — with clear routines and small wins — is genuinely magic for shy kids.

What about injuries?

Jiu Jitsu emphasizes leverage and technique over strength and impact, which makes it one of the lowest-injury martial arts. We teach safe falling, escapes, and how to tap early. Listen to your body, communicate with your training partner, and you'll be fine.

04 — Membership & pricing

Pricing & commitment

How much does membership cost?

Pricing depends on the program and how many classes per week you'd like. We'll walk you through every option after your free trial — no high-pressure sales, ever. Family discounts and student rates are available.

Are there long contracts?

No. Memberships are month-to-month. We earn your business every single month — that's how we want it. Pause, cancel, or come back any time with no fees.

What if I travel or get injured?

You can pause your membership for up to 90 days per year, free of charge. Just let us know. We've been there — life happens.

05 — Our academy

About Family Tree

Who teaches the classes?

Every class is led by a black or brown belt instructor with formal teaching credentials. Our head coach has 15+ years of experience and trains every program lead personally. Meet the coaches on our Contact page.

Do you have a competition team?

Yes. Competing is completely optional, but if you're interested we have an active competition team that travels to events year-round. New competitors are welcome.

Can I just come watch a class first?

Of course. Drop by during any open class — we'll show you around. Most people who come to watch end up signing up for the free trial on the spot, but there's no expectation.

Still curious?
